The 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University (Czech: 1. lékařská fakulta ) in Prague is one of the five medical faculties of Charles University . It is a direct successor to the original Medical Faculty, which has been part of the university since it was founded in 1348 (along with the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Theology) by King Charles IV . The symbol of the 1st Medical Faculty is a pelican .

In 1953, based on a decision by the then Ministry of Universities of Czechoslovakia , it was decided to divide the medical faculty into three separate faculties:

  • Faculty of General Medicine (FVL) - today 1st Faculty of Medicine
  • Faculty of Pediatrics (FDL) - today 2nd Faculty of Medicine
  • Public Health Faculty of Medicine (LFH) - now the 3rd Faculty of Medicine

The change of the name of the FLV to the 1st Medical Faculty was only carried out after the Velvet Revolution in 1990. Since the mid-1990s, the 1st Medical Faculty has offered human and dental medicine courses in both Czech and English.
