The culture and military museum is located in Grafenwöhr . The museum is supported by the Heimatverein Grafenwöhr e. V. 1892. After a renovation in 2015, the focus of the cultural exhibition is on the history of the city of Grafenwöhr and its development through the military training area. From the founding of the city to the First World War, inflation and the Second World War, the permanent exhibition also paints a comprehensive picture of coexistence with members of the US Army, from the Cold War to the present day. The military department is dedicated to the establishment and construction of the military training area, its development and expansion up to the Second World War, as well as various military uniforms and their significance.

history

The history of the museum can be traced back to 1932. A local history museum was already set up in the “Old Parish Court” at that time, but the building was damaged by bombing during the Second World War and some museum pieces were lost.

In 1956 the museum was reopened in the “Kastenhaus” of the city of Grafenwöhr and gradually expanded until it occupied the entire building.

On the recommendation of the State Office for Non-State Museums in Bavaria , the existing museum was expanded to include a military collection. The Heimatverein took over the sponsorship, and so in 1989 the exhibition "History of the Grafenwöhr Military Training Area" was opened in a new building. In 1990 the offer was expanded to include the exhibition “From colorful skirt to combat suit” and the local history museum in “1. Upper Palatinate Culture and Military Museum ”renamed.

In 1992 the box house was renovated and the museum was expanded again to include the exhibition “Everyday life in the Upper Palatinate”. Since 1998 there has also been a "walk-in depot". Equipment from agriculture and handicrafts are shown here.

In 2015, the cultural exhibition was refurbished and now shows the city's history and coexistence with the US soldiers. The name of the museum was changed to "Grafenwöhr Culture and Military Museum".

A room in the museum is available for changing special exhibitions that are offered regularly.
