1st Word Plus was a word processing program for the Graphical Environment Manager (GEM). This word processor ran on Atari STs , Acorn RISC computers and IBM PCs on which GEM was installed.

Development history

With the introduction of the Atari 520ST in December 1985, the software package GEMwrite was announced, which appeared the following year. This included the 1st Word program , which for the first time enabled native word processing under the GEM surface of the Atari ST and was included with every computer sold. Until then, older programs that had been released for the Zilog Z80 processor could only be used with the supplied CPMZ80 emulator . An expanded version 1st Word Plus was sold by GST.

The PC version presented in May 1988 used the GEM graphical user interface from Digital Research . Further editions of the program were offered for the operating systems Arthur and RISC OS , the Torch XXX and FlexOS.

Functions

From the start, it was characterized by the fact that it used the possibilities of the graphical user interface and, for example, supported the WYSIWYG principle. However, you could only use one font , the essential optical formatting was limited to bold and italic fonts and the underlining of text. In addition, it was not possible to vary between single-line, one-and-a-half- line and two- line spacing within the document, and only the utility program 1st Prop allowed the generation of proportional font .

For this, 1st Word Plus had a footnote function that was good for the time , which contributed to its spread among students.

Version of Compo

In 1993 version 4.0 was delivered, which was no longer developed by GST, but by Compo. 1st Word Plus 4.0 had nothing in common with the previous versions, Compo used the name to sell a version of That's Write with a reduced functionality .
