22-24 Shore Street (Port Charlotte)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Three residential buildings can be found at 22-24 Shore Street in the Scottish city of Port Charlotte on the Hebridean island of Islay . The houses are on Shore Street in downtown Port Ellen, near the ferry terminal. On July 20, 1971, they were included in the British List of Monuments in Category B as an ensemble . Before the entry was changed in 2004, they were registered under the names House Maxwell (No. 22), House Carmichael (No. 23) and House Horn (No. 24).

description

The exact time of construction of the buildings is not known, so that only the early 19th century can be given as a period. The closed houses mark the beginning of Shore Street when coming from the south . Across the street is the rocky coastline of Loch Indaal , where Port Charlotte is located, so this side is undeveloped and the buildings are clearly visible from the waterfront. All three buildings are traditionally built on an elongated area of around 9 × 7.5 m 2 . The houses No. 22 and 23 are structurally identical from the outside. Although No. 24 was also built on two floors, it towers over the two buildings to the south. What they have in common, however, is that their facades are plastered using the traditional Harling technique. The buildings end with slate roofs.
