2M

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2M Television is Morocco's second public television channel and first went on air on March 4, 1989.

History of the television station

In 1988, the SOREAD company signed a framework agreement with the Moroccan state, which enabled it to operate a terrestrial television channel on Moroccan territory, which allowed it to start broadcasting in 1989. At first, the programs were still broadcast in encrypted form.

Shortly after launch, the channel became very popular, but it moved in a complex cultural environment and suffered from piracy and unfair competition. After five years of existence, it was no longer a channel with international aspirations as originally designed, but rather a channel with a regional focus that tried to differentiate itself more clearly from other channels through its differences and peculiarities.

Takeover by the state

Seven years after the founding, the main shareholders SOREAD and ONA, who had got into financial difficulties, withdrew from operational responsibility, whereupon the channel was taken over by the Moroccan state as majority owner with 68%.

today

After the expansion of the broadcasting area to the entire Moroccan national territory in the late 1990s, 2M triggered a real boom in the Moroccan media landscape and is now one of the most watched North African broadcasters.
