339-343 High Street

A residential and commercial building is located at 339-343 High Street in the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy in the Council Area Fife . In 1975 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

A one-story house was probably built on the site between 1500 and 1550. The current building was built in the second half of the same century, with high probability around 1590. The builder was a wealthy merchant or shipowner who used it as his own residence. His business premises were set up on the first floor. In the course of the following two centuries, the interior in particular was redesigned several times. In particular, the living space was divided into several residential units and a passage to the back courtyard was created. From 1966 the building fabric deteriorated. The Scottish Historic Buildings Trust paid for the restoration in 1993. Among other things, a chimney on the street side was removed, which was added in the 18th century.
