3K model (CSCW)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 3K model is intended to classify and systematize applications from the field of groupware or Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW).

construction

For this purpose, a triangle is initially used, in which the three corners stand for the three central support functions: coordination, communication and cooperation.

  • Communication means the exchange of information between the members of a group.
  • Coordination is about coordinating the tasks of the group members.
  • Cooperation deals with the joint accomplishment of tasks.

Depending on the extent to which the functional areas are supported, the different systems can be located in different positions within the triangle.

In addition, the different systems can be grouped into system classes. These four system classes are:

  • communication
  • common information spaces
  • Workflow management
  • Workgroup computing.

System classes

System class communication

Communication systems serve to support the communication between the group members and to overcome spatial distance and time difference. This system class includes e-mail systems, video conference systems, and bulletin board systems.

System class common information spaces

Information relevant to the groups is provided, managed and organized in common information rooms. The information is stored here and retrieved, modified and saved using special access. This class includes: B. special databases, distributed hypertext systems or news systems.

System class workflow management

Workflow management supports the coordination of the modeling, simulation, execution and control of workflows. In addition to special workflow management tools (project management tools), e-mail systems and databases for supporting coordination also fall into this system class.

System class workgroup computing

Systems of this class are used to process a task together. These include B. Appointment management systems, group editors and decision and meeting support systems.

origin

The 3K model was first described in Teufel et al., Computer Support in Group Work (1995). The term 3K model can be found for the first time in Borghoff et al., Computer Supported Collaborative Work (2000).
