description

The building is on the south side of High Street in Elgin's historic center. The nearby residential and commercial building at 50-52 High Street is also classified as a Category A monument. The building was erected in 1688 for a merchant. The Red Lion Inn later used the premises. A restoration was carried out in 1980.

The north-facing main facade of the building is five axes wide. Its facades are plastered with Harl , with natural stone edging being offset. A round arched arcade runs on the ground floor of the three-storey building . Their openings are now closed by flat shop windows or entrance doors. Only the central arch is still open. A passage to the inner courtyard runs through it. The arcades are built with squat columns with square capitals . The frames of the twelve-part lattice windows on the upper floors are rounded. The slate-covered gable roof does not have dormers and is designed with stepped gables .

Two wings continue around the inner courtyard. One is a one-story, three-axis extension from the 18th century. The second was also carried out during the 18th century. It is two-story and four axes wide. Their roofs are also covered with slate .
