Division history
156th Reserve Division
The division was established on October 5, 1942 as the 156th Reserve Division through a reclassification of Division No. 156. It was relocated to the Channel coast in the Ardre area south of Calais on February 12, 1943 to protect the coastline. On February 2, 1944, the 156th RD was disbanded and reclassified into the 47th Infantry Division.
47th Infantry Division
After the formation, the division was used between Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer for coastal protection. Later, in August, the 47th Infantry Division was added to the 5th Panzer Army , which fought against the Allied troops landed in Operation Overlord . The 47th Infantry Division was pushed past Paris by the Allied troops to Mons, where it was surrounded and destroyed.
47th People's Grenadier Division
The division was reorganized in Aarhus in Denmark as the 47th Volksgrenadier Division through a reorganization of the 577th Grenadier Division and destroyed in the Bergzabern area in March 1945 , with the remainder of the staff being taken prisoner by the Americans.
