5th book of Ezra
The 5th book of Ezra (also: V. Esra ; abbreviation: 5Esr ) is a Christian extension of the fourth book of Ezra . It dates from the 2nd century AD and is only preserved in the Latin Bible , but not in the oriental Bible translations. The 5th book of Ezra consists of two chapters and is an introduction to the 4th book of Ezra. Therefore, its counting does not begin until the third chapter.
In the 5th book of Ezra, Ezra, as a prophet rejected by Israel , proclaims threatening words against Israel and words of comfort for the new people of God (the Church). A stylistic characteristic are the frequent introductory formulas (“Thus speaks the Lord Almighty”).
