The Bornsee is the actual (historical) source lake of the Havel .

Surname

Hence the name of the lake 'Born' (=  source ) is derived. It lies east of the Müritz in the area of the municipality Ankershagen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and formed the Havelquellsee until the 14th or 15th century. The small settlement Bornhof is located on the north-west bank. The body of water is part of the Müritz National Park , with the largest part of the west bank being its border. The Bornsee is fed by rainwater and strata water in the immediate vicinity. It drains into the Trinnensee via a surface connection . The Trinnensee in turn drains to the Mühlensee .

Originally the Havel spring water flowed superficially from the south bank of the Mühlensee into the Dieckenbruch . In order to be able to operate a watermill around 500 meters east of the Mühlensee, a dam was built on the south bank of the Mühlensee in the 14th or 15th century and a breakthrough was made on the east bank towards Ankershagen . Since then, the Bornsee (via the Trinnensee and Mühlensee) no longer drains in the direction of the original Havel, but via the Tollense and Peene into the Baltic Sea . The dam that was built at that time has slightly shifted the natural North Sea-Baltic watershed .

In 2007, a small bubbling artificial Havel spring was created on the south bank of the Mühlensee in the upper part of the Dieckenbruch. A few liters per minute now symbolically feed "real" Havel spring water from the Bornsee over the Trinnen and Mühlensee into the Havel.
