The symbolic source of the Havel

The Mühlensee is located near Ankershagen in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The 40-hectare lake, surrounded by forests, is one of the three historic source lakes of the Havel , along with the Born and Trinnensee . These Havel spring lakes are located on the southern edge of the main terminal moraine of the "Pomeranian stage" of the Vistula glaciation and originally discharged their water into Diekenbruch, adjacent to the south, from which the Havel emerges.

In the 14th or 15th century at the latest, a breakthrough to the east, the Mühlenbach, was created at the Mühlensee in order to operate a mill 500 meters away with the water. In order to be able to fully use the draining water of the Mühlensee and the other two lakes mentioned for the mill operation, a dam was poured at the southern end, towards the Diekenbruch, which blocks the connection to the Havel. Since then, the Mühlensee has been draining via the Mühlengraben to the Großer Penzliner Stadtsee and from there via the Wurzenbach and Aalbach to the Tollense and on to the Baltic Sea via the Peene and Peenestrom . It used to drain into the North Sea as one of the source lakes of the Havel , because the Pomeranian main terminal moraine forms the natural watershed between the systems.

The Diekenbruch is considered the source of the Havel today. However, since the heaped dam was only applied to the bog soil, water still seeps from the Mühlensee into Diekenbruch. Since 2007, an artificial spring set in natural stone has brought some of this water to the surface on the northern edge of the Diekenbruch, so that at least symbolically the connection to the original source area has been restored.

The Mühlensee lies on the edge of the Müritz National Park . It is very close to nature and has clean, clear water. It is a popular bathing water for the population in the area.
