Tongue Basin Lake |
The Große Stadtsee is a lake in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ( Germany ).
The lake is located south of the city of Penzlin . The Werder district is on the east bank. The body of water is around 2.6 kilometers long and up to 650 meters wide. The maximum water depth is approx. 17 meters. In the middle part, the lake is divided into two basins by a peninsula near Werder. There is a small island in the larger south basin. The north basin has a peninsula on the east side, on which the remains of a Slavic rampart from the 10th to 12th centuries can be seen. The shore of the lake is largely unwooded and quite hilly. In the south the mountain ranges reach 73.5 meters, in the northeast up to 78.7 meters.
Like most of Mecklenburg's lakes, the lake was formed during the last ice advances of the Vistula Ice Age .
