The Bavarian AB3 Bay 86 and B3 Bay 86 were braked compartment cars for general passenger traffic which were originally built as two-axle vehicles. They were listed in the car register of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (K.Bay.Sts.B.) from 1897 under sheet no. 52 or in the one from 1913 under sheet no. 57 for the genus AB and under sheet no. 107 for the class B out.

development

The growing route network went hand in hand with the need for suitable cars for passenger transport. From 1879 onwards, a new generation of compartment cars of types A , AB and C was procured, which, in contrast to the previous generation, were already equipped with toilets. In addition, the Heberlein rope brake, which had been in use in Bavaria since 1872, was replaced by the continuous compressed air brake from Westinghouse.

procurement

In the years 1886 and 1887 a total of 80 type AB cars were procured. These originally only had two axes. With the introduction of the steering axles , a transversely movable central axis was added. From the wagons according to sheet no. 52 of the 1897 register, a total of 58 cars were procured. In addition to a raised brakeman's cab, they were also the first Bavarian passenger coaches to be equipped with continuous Westinghouse type compressed air brakes. According to sheet no. 57 of the 1913 register, 16 cars remained as class AB while 24 cars according to sheet no. 107 of the 1913 directory have been converted to category B while maintaining the seat layout.

Whereabouts

A total of eighteen cars were no longer listed in the 1913 directory. Another four cars are handwritten in the 1913 directory as part of the updates up to 1919. The whereabouts of the other wagons is unclear. However, they are all likely to have been retired by 1930.

Constructive features

Underframe

The frame of the car was made entirely of profile iron and riveted. The outer side members were U-shaped with outward flanges. The cross members were also made of U-profiles and not cranked. As a towing device, the wagons had screw couplings according to VDEV . The drawbar was spring-loaded throughout and in the middle. The car had slotted basket buffers with an installation length of 650 mm, the buffer plates had a diameter of 370 mm. To accommodate the raised brakeman's cab, the underframe protruded 330 mm above the car body.

drive

The wagons had riveted half-timbered axles. The axles were stored in sliding axle bearings. The wheels had spoked wheel bodies of the Bavarian type 38. Due to the long wheelbase of 6,600 millimeters, club type A4 steering axles were used for the two end axles . The 2,000 millimeter long suspension springs each had 8 leaves on the end axes and only 6 leaves on the central axis. The cross-section of the leaves was 95 x 13 millimeters.

In addition to a hand spindle brake, which could be operated from the raised brakeman's cab, compressed air brakes from the Westinghouse system were also installed. In some cars, a Hardy brake system was also installed in parallel, with some only the suction air lines required for this.

Car body

The frame of the total of 8,900 mm long car body consisted of a wooden frame work . This was clad with sheet metal on the outside and wood on the inside. The joints between the sheets were covered by cover strips. The roof was rounded flat and pulled out over the side walls. The side walls were slightly indented in the lower area. The carriages had continuous sidewalls and brief steps on the respective compartment doors. The raised brakeman's cab was the same as that of the BOB and was accessible on both sides with a ladder.

Furnishing

In its original version (sheet no. 52 in the directory from 1897), this type of car carried both 1st and 2nd class and had a total of 3 ½ compartments. There were 5 seats in 1st class and 21 in 2nd class. Passages in the compartments enabled access to one of the two toilets from all seats. The row of compartments was from the brakeman's cab side from B - Abort - B - A - Abort - B whereby the last compartment was only a half compartment. For those in the 1913 directory under sheet no. 58 cars listed, this class allocation was retained. For the trolleys according to sheet no. 107 of the 1913 register, all seats were converted to class B while retaining the compartments and their order . A total of 26 seats were available. The lighting was done by gas lights. The two gas tanks of 380 liters each required for the supply were attached lengthways to the base frame. The heating took place via steam. The wagons were ventilated by static roof ventilators and retractable windows.
