ABBYY was founded in 1989 by David Yang when he was still a fourth year college student. The company was initially run under the name BIT Software. The name was changed to ABBYY in 1997.

In 1990 the company launched its first product: ABBYY Lingvo, an electronic dictionary for DOS and later for Windows and Mac .

ABBYY FineReader, a PDF and OCR application for PC and Mac, was introduced in 1993. FineReader was soon recognized as the industry standard for the high accuracy of text recognition and the ability to convert multilingual documents . The application now has over 20 million users worldwide. The latest version, FineReader 14, was released on January 25, 2017. ABBYY licenses FineReader's OCR technology to several companies including Fujitsu , Panasonic , Xerox , Samsung, and others.

Today, ABBYY has over 400 patents and patent applications registered worldwide. The company uses its technological expertise to facilitate digital transformation and focuses on solutions for companies, social institutions and authorities.

ABBYY software is an integral part of a range of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions , such as BluePrism and UiPath.

In 2017, Language Services, a translation and localization agency formerly known as "ABBYY Language Services" or "ALS" for short, separated from ABBYY and became an independent company.
