The ABC of German Economy is a company based in Darmstadt (GmbH) and a database for German manufacturers and products. As a so-called business-to-business search engine, it is primarily aimed at commercial users who are looking for suppliers. With more than four million entries, the ABC of the German economy is one of the largest databases of its kind in Germany.

history

The ABC of German Business was founded in Darmstadt in 1949 and quickly developed into one of the largest printed lists of goods and suppliers. The book contains business information about industrial companies, industrial service providers, manufacturers, wholesalers and general importers. In 1987 an accompanying CD-ROM version was added, which for the first time allows a search like in a database. The internet version started in 1999. In August 2004 the Schober Information Group took over the ABC of the German economy, which had gone bankrupt in April.

In July 2007, the Bisnode Group bought the ABC of German Economy from the Schober Information Group through its subsidiary Hoppenstedt Holding . In 2009, companies were able to edit their entries themselves for the first time. Book and CD version were published for the last time in the same year.

In July 2012 Bisnode reached an agreement with the Dutch Avant Invest BV on the sale of its subsidiary ABC der Deutschen Wirtschaft GmbH. Avant Invest already owns the ABC companies in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Database and systematics

The database contains more than four million companies with addresses. This makes it one of the largest German company databases - according to its counting method, the Federal Statistical Office shows almost 3.6 million companies for 2007.

Each company is assigned one or more product or service categories, of which there are more than 120,000. Companies can edit their entry themselves and assign the categories as well as record business activities, key figures and important contact persons. There is also the option of uploading information material such as brochures or product photos. All entries are also editorially checked and supplemented by ABC employees.

Business model

The database is available to everyone on the Internet for free use. Company entries are also basically free of charge. The company finances itself from so-called premium entries, where companies pay for special services. This includes, above all, the highlighted placement of the company entry in search results and the assignment of additional product categories.
