Roof donor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dachgeber is a Germany-wide network for cyclists . The whole point is to offer cyclists a free “roof over their head” on their travels, that is, a place to stay overnight. The system is based on reciprocity and has so far comprised around 3,000 participants. It has existed since 1987 and is supported by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC). Updated address lists are drawn up annually and given to members.

International distribution

The idea originally came from Australia and got to Europe from there.

This principle can now also be found in the following countries: Switzerland , France , Austria , Denmark , Great Britain , Italy .

Internationally, Warm Showers is now gaining many new members, a brokerage of sleeping places for cyclists similar to the couch surfing idea.

Origin in Germany

Wolfgang Reiche brought the idea of "roofing" with him to Germany in 1985 after cycling around the world. A similar cycling club in Australia was very helpful to him. Using word of mouth and newspapers, he spread the idea of opening an umbrella club and collected addresses from interested parties. When he had 230 addresses together, the first umbrella donor directory was published in 1987.
