ALARP

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ALARP is an English acronym meaning a s l ow a s r easonably p racticable (so low as reasonably practicable ').

It is a principle of risk reduction that is used, for example, in risk management . The ALARP principle states that risks should be reduced to a level that guarantees the highest level of security that is reasonably practicable (limitation of the maximum expected damage). This means, for example, that measures for identified product risks only need to be implemented during product development if they are also reasonably practicable (financially and / or technically feasible with reasonable effort).

Example of a risk graph

The ALARP principle is used in risk management (see also probabilistic safety analysis ) . Within a risk management process, a risk graph ( RISK MATRIX ) is used to determine which risks are in the acceptable range, which are in the ALARP range and which are in the unacceptable range. The classification of the risk graph is usually project-specific and assumes that the two parameters probability of occurrence and extent of damage are defined.

In a continuous risk management process, existing risks are continuously monitored and evaluated and new risks identified. Based on an evaluation of the parameters probability of occurrence and extent of damage for each individual risk, it is classified in the risk graph. Risks that are in the unacceptable range must be brought into the ALARP range through risk-reducing measures. If this is not possible, then using a cost-benefit analysis ( cost-benefit analysis ) to determine whether the risks outweigh the expected benefits.

For medical devices, the European edition EN ISO 14971: 2012 (Annex Z) of the ISO 14971 standard ("Medical devices - application of risk management to medical devices") clarified that the application of economic considerations when deciding on the acceptance of residual risks by European legislation ( Directive 93/42 / EEC on medical devices ) is prohibited. This clarification does not mean a change in the content of the standard, and the use of an ALARP area is not generally prohibited.
