APICS - The Association for Operations Management (originally American Production and Inventory Control Society ) is anorganization foundedin the USA in1957to improve the competitiveness of American industrial companies. It is comparable to the German REFA association .
The translation of the Mission Statement states the goals of APICS:
"The Association for Operations Management promotes excellence in operational management of individuals and companies through superior education and training, internationally recognized certifications, extensive resources and a global network of experienced industry practitioners."

In the USA, APICS is divided into 14 regions and over 270 local chapters , which independently organize training events. Outside the USA, APICS exams and certifications can also be obtained through partners - mostly private companies .
In 2014 APICS merged with the Supply Chain Council (SCC) under the new name APICS Supply Chain Council (APICS SCC). The two organizations had cooperated for a long time.
Certifications
APICS offers advanced training, testing and certification for three job profiles:
CPIM | Certified in Production and Inventory Management | Certification for production and inventory management |
CSCP | Certified Supply Chain Professional | Certified supply chain specialist |
CFPIM | Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management | Certified "Fellow" in production and inventory management |
Until 2008, certification for integrated resource management ( Certified in Integrated Resource Management , CIRM) was also offered.
Effect of the APICS
In the USA and beyond, APICS is one of the most influential organizations in the field of business organization. The MRP crusade carried out by APICS in 1972 was one of the factors that contributed to the rapid spread of MRP systems in the American economy. APICS is also one of the driving forces behind the spread of the idea of lean production and other advanced methods of production planning and control (PPS).
