ARTES-11
ARTES-11 (Small GEO satellite Initiative) was an initiative of ESA within the long-term development program ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems), which aimed to define a platform for small telecommunications satellites (Small Geo Platform (SGEO. Today: SmallGEO) ). This was presented in 2007. Before this initiative was introduced, there was no comparable European concept for such a platform. The idea was that with this project to define a European standard platform, European companies could better survive in the market. The production goal was to provide 3-5 satellites per year for European industry. The order was to be carried out by OHB .
Division / phases
The ARTES-11 initiative consisted of two successive sections, which were to take place in phases, partly simultaneously:
- Development and manufacture of a generic satellite bus. Phases 0 / A / B / C / D
- Development, manufacture and launch of a first satellite mission for demonstration and flight testing. Phases A / B / C / D

properties
Modularity: The aim was to achieve a high degree of modularity so that the platform had the following properties:
- Positioning type: Direct Injection / GTO Injection.
- Easy antenna accommodation: separate antenna and "Earth Deck" module.
- Separate payload module and standardized interfaces (possibility of parallel integration and simplified adaptation).
Compatibility: with all GTO or GEO launch vehicles .
Applications
The scope should cover the following points:
- Ku-Band : TV
- P- / X- / Ka-Band : communication satellites
- Scalable multimedia applications
- Relay station for data transmission
Current mission status
In January 2017, the Hispasat 36W-1, the first satellite to emerge from this initiative, was launched. The satellite was manufactured by OHB, the payload was supplied by Tesat-Spacecom . Further satellites based on ARTES-11 are Heinrich Hertz (start planned for the end of 2021), Electra (start planned for 2021), EDRS-C and the third generation of Meteosat satellites (from 2021)
An extension of ARTES-11.3 was agreed between OHB and ESA. The corresponding contract was signed in September 2011.
