ART (file format)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ART is a proprietary image file format of AOL . The compressing format was originally developed by the Johnson-Grace company, but it was bought by the AOL online service. The compression is lossy, but its intensity is adjustable down to a lossless storage mode. The file receives .art as the extension .

ART files support a color depth of 24 bit, use layers for progressive display over slow connections (for example, first quickly loadable outlines, then details, then font), and offer a comment field for a maximum of 200 characters. When an image is converted to ART format, the software first analyzes the data and then decides which compression method to use.

In addition to the ART Press program package distributed free of charge by Johnson-Grace, ART was temporarily supported by Microsoft , primarily in the Internet Explorer web browser , and was supported by the Graphic Workshop Professional software from Alchemy Mindworks Corp. AOL used this format in the Modemära - apart from using for their own content - to the Internet surfing in the World Wide Web to compress images occurring, thereby reducing waiting times for page layout. The process was implemented using an in-house proxy server , which was used to process the WWW data traffic whenever the AOL software was used.
