aRts ( acronym for analog real time synthesizer ) is a program that simulates an analog synthesizer under KDE . One of the most important components of aRts is the so-called sound server , which can mix several music channels simultaneously and in real time.

The sound server itself is called aRtsd (d for daemon ) and is also the standard sound server for KDE 3. However, it is independent of this and can also be used in other projects.

The future of aRts

In December 2004, the inventor and main developer of aRts, Stefan Westerfeld, announced that he would be leaving the project because of fundamental development and technical problems. In KDE 4 , which appeared in 2006 , the Phonon multimedia abstraction layer was used. This enables the user to freely choose the sound server. aRts became obsolete and is no longer being developed.
