ATB Financial (Alberta Treasury Branches) is a financial services company headquartered in Edmonton , Alberta , Canada . The company is owned by the Province of Alberta. It offers financial services to approximately 680,000 clients and provincial companies only. ATB has 167 branches and 130 agencies and employs more than 5,300 people.
history
ATB was founded on September 29, 1938 by the first Ministry of Social Affairs under William Aberhart . The first store opened at Rocky Mountain House on the same day. In the late 1980s, the financial services provider was embroiled in a scandal. Peter Pocklington's of Gainers Foods and the Ghermezian Brother, founders of West Edmonton Mall, were also involved in the scandal through bad loans and political interests. In the 1990s, the provincial government reformed the company to make it more competitive. In 1996 independent directors were selected.
