The non-profit animal welfare organization Aargauischer Tierschutzverein ATs is a non-profit organization that has been committed to animal welfare in the canton of Aargau since 1869 . It is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in Switzerland, politically and denominationally neutral, and acts as the official cantonal registration office for foundlings and missing animals.

history

On December 23, 1854, the law on cruelty to animals was enacted in the canton of Aargau , in which the mistreatment of animals was made a criminal offense for the first time. The Aargau Animal Welfare Association was founded with 234 members on May 4, 1869, and grew to 730 members the following year. The writings from that time are archived in the ATs and describe, for example, that the first general assembly in 1870 could not be held due to an unexpected military event.

activities

The association catches, looks after and mediates cats, dogs and small animals such as B. rabbits, rats or birds such as budgies and pigeons. Dog walks and cat petting are important support from the volunteers for the nine permanent employees. A number of animals that can no longer be conveyed, be it because they need medical treatment, or because they can no longer allow human contact after their bad experiences, have their permanent place in the animal shelter as sponsored animals.
