AV link

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

AV-Link ("AV.link") is a SCART- based, expandable connection system for the interconnection of audio / video devices (e.g. TV, video recorder, satellite receiver) for the transmission of analog audio and video signals.

Procedure

The technical basis is the interconnection of devices using point-to-point connections. This connection is generally known as SCART - or in standardization as a peritelevision connection. The basic standard EN 50049-1 defines possible point-to-point connections between two AV devices or between an AV device and the image display device (television receiver or monitor). This standard defines signals, connector types and assignments.

With AV-Link, several devices are connected via a chain-like arrangement of the device connections. That is why there are usually several sockets on one device. This means that a large number of devices can work on one bus. The interconnection and the associated protocol are described in the standards of the EN 50157 "AV-Link" series, which are a supplement to EN 50049-1.

Surname

AV-Link is an abbreviation for Audio / Video-Link and is based on a development by Philips . Most manufacturers use their own brand name for their implementation of the standard:

The protocol for connecting devices to a common bus for connecting audio / video devices was adopted for the digital connection of devices via HDMI and is called Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) there.

Functions

The functions of the AV-Link depend on the capabilities of the devices.

Possible are:

  • Switch on the TV (from standby) when inserting a (purchased) video cassette or DVD into the player
  • Switch the TV to the Scart input if you press the VCR or DVD Play button (but sometimes also via switching voltage)
  • Direct recording of the current TV program from the VCR or DVD recorder with just one button (TV as receiver for recorder)
  • Transfer of the channels from TV to VCR or DVD recorder or vice versa
  • Switching between 4: 3 and 16: 9 (partly also via switching voltage)
