A Patristic Greek Lexicon

A Patristic Greek Lexicon is the leading Greek-English special dictionary on ancient Greek in patristic literature, published between 1961 and 1969 by the theologian Geoffrey William Hugo Lampe .

The first impetus for the creation of the dictionary can be traced back to 1906 and came from the Central Society for Sacred Study under the direction of HB Swete , who originally planned a philological lexicon of Patristic Greek . The later editors changed the plan to that of a theological dictionary of patristic literature based on the model of Gerhard Kittel's theological dictionary for the New Testament .

However, since it was decided when Henry Stuart Jones reworked Liddell-Scott to exclude all Christian writers, the editors were forced to make the pragmatic compromise of taking into account all the lemmas beyond the theologically relevant vocabulary that were created by the Liddell , which was created in parallel -Scott-Jones were not recorded. In this respect, the dictionary represents a supplement or, as it is called in the foreword, a companion to Liddell-Scott-Jones, on whose lexicographical format it is based. However, the editors subordinate the philological orientation to the theological one.

The entire patristic literature is covered from the great councils to the second council of Nicaea and the disputation on the iconoclast controversy , so that the Greek Christian literature is covered from Clement of Rome to Theodor Studites or approximately from the 1st to the 8th century. It was based on the leading editions of the authors and works recorded at the time, which are listed in a more than 30-page index, otherwise one had to refer to the respective edition at Migne .
