Aachener Tor - field side

The Aachener Tor is a gate belonging to the medieval city fortifications of the city of Bergheim and represents the city's landmark .

The gate

The gate was built in the 14th century as a two-storey double tower gate with a passage designed as a pointed arch . The footpath leading through the right flank tower today was added later.

In the 16th and 17th centuries the gate was repeatedly badly damaged. Around 1800 the facility was converted into a prison . Renovations took place between 1911 and 1914 and 1925. In 1956 there was a fire. Then in 1959 the hipped roof was renewed. Another renovation took place in 1980/81.

Above the field side, i.e. the side facing away from the city, there is an elaborately designed coat of arms stone depicting a lion.

Today the Aachener Tor is used by the Bergheim scouts, the tribe and the Hag Nibelung. The groups belong to the German Scout Association and have been using the gate as their home since 1947.

Extensive renovation work has been taking place at Aachener Tor since 2014, as the stability was no longer guaranteed. The work is to be completed in spring 2017, the total cost of the renovation is estimated at around 2.1 million euros.

city wall

Large parts of the Bergheim city wall are not historical, but were only built in the early 1980s in the course of the relocation of federal highway 55 and the construction of the pedestrian zone. To the north the wall borders directly on the Aachener Tor; to the south there is initially a representative residential building.
