The Theater Elsinore is a recorded today historic theater in the open air museum Den Gamle By the Danish city of Aarhus .

history

Today's theater building has only been preserved in its original form inside. The house, built in 1817, was initially on the corner of Bjergegade and Groskenstræde in Helsingør .

The Helsingør Theater was built and operated by the local theater entrepreneurs who were recruited from wealthy citizens. The citizens subscribed for shares and thus assumed responsibility for their theater, which offers space for 220 spectators. There is no royal box here because it was conceived as a bourgeois theater from the start.

Helsingør Theater often brought didactic and educational plays at the beginning of its history. The citizens sometimes played themselves, but professional ensembles also made guest appearances here. The theater also functioned as the city's events hall. To do this, the rows of benches were removed, the auditorium raised and the orchestra pit covered so that a large dance floor could be created. From 1903 until the last season in 1957, the theater also housed the municipal cinema Kosmorama.

Little by little, the theater proved to be out of date for scenic and theatrical productions and it was decided to demolish the building to make room for a modern cinema. The interior was therefore transferred to a building in the old town where it has been housed since 1961. The building is now used for theater purposes, but meetings are also held. It is also the venue for the Aarhus Summer Opera.
