Abbas Fahdel ( Arabic عباس فاضل, DMG ʿAbbās Fāḍil ; * Babylon , Iraq ) is an Iraqi-French film director, screenwriter, and film critic. At the age of eighteen he went to France and studied and earned a doctorate in film studies at the Sorbonne . After several years of journalistic activity and after having made a few short films ( Things in the shadow , Weegee's World , Sunday at a suburban café ), he returned to his country in January 2002. There he shot the documentary Retour à Babylone and, after the American invasion, the documentary Nous les Irakiens (2004). Dawn of the World (2008) is his first feature film and was awarded at the Festival International du Film Asiatique de Versoul (Best Screenplay), the Rabat International Film Festival (Grand Jury Prize) and the Gulf Film Festival (Best Film) in 2009.
