Getting people off a ship in distress

As Abbergen is the process in which people , equipment or cargo are taken over a ship at sea. Usually a ship is then in acute distress . The term rescue is synonymous in shipping . The retrieved cargo is then loaded onto waiting barges and other rescue equipment and transported away. People are often rescued by rescue helicopters, as this poses less danger than by a sea rescue cruiser or similar.

While salvage is about rescuing people who are either in distress at sea or who are acutely ill on board a ship, the term salvage in shipping refers to the securing, lifting and towing of material assets, typically ships.

Hiding is not safe for those affected and also for the rescuers. People can be crushed when trying to transfer from a small ship - for example a yacht - to a much larger one, or fall while climbing. Helicopters can only fly in suitable weather and the rescue winch line can get caught in parts of the ship.
