Image relation

As image relation is called in philosophy and the Image Science , the relationship between image and depicted object and its problems.

Dialectical materialism

In the philosophical system of dialectical materialism , the relationship between image and depicted object was expressed in the so-called image relation .

Depending on the type of image and the depicted object, the DiaMat differentiates between image relations with different properties. The best known is the truth relation, i.e. the image relation between statement and facts . Furthermore, there is a mapping relation between a concept and the logical class of individuals it represents. Both image relationships correspond in the essential characteristics: For example, the image is secondary to the object depicted. On the other hand, it differs specifically in that the statement is based on a truth value , which the term lacks.

In view of current philosophical, art-historical and visual-scientific discussions that have developed a differentiated and complex concept of image and representation, this historical view from the middle of the 20th century can no longer satisfy current debates.
