Abbotsford and Northeastern Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Abbotsford and Northeastern Railroad (A&NE) was a railroad company in Wisconsin ( United States ). It operated the approximately 24 kilometers long Abbotsford – Athens railway .

history

The railway company was founded on April 12, 1889 and intended to connect the city of Athens via a cross connection with the north-south main routes of the Wisconsin Central Railroad and the Milwaukee Road between Abbotsford and Wausau with branch to Merrill . Construction soon began, and on October 1, 1889, the first section from Abbotsford on Wisconsin Central to Athens went into operation. It was to stay that way, however, the railway company ran out of funds and the sparsely populated area east of Athens prevented further construction.

Passenger traffic was sparse. The timetable of November 18, 1909 provided for a pair of trains every working day and another that only ran on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The trains took an hour to cover the entire route.

On February 1, 1910, Wisconsin Central acquired the railway. In turn, it had been owned by the Soo Line Railroad since 1909 . The line is closed today.
