Abdemon (Tyros)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abdemon was a sage from Tire and adviser to King Hiram of Tire.

The only source is Flavius Josephus , Antiquitates Judaicae 8, 146–149, who in turn refers to Menander of Ephesus , who transferred the Tyrian archives into Greek .

He reports that Abdemon was young but could solve all the riddles Solomon sent to Hiram. After a certain Dios, Solomon and Hiram had bet for money, and at the beginning Hiram lost large sums because he could not solve Solomon's riddle. But after he had secured the help of Abdemon, the latter was not only able to solve the riddles of the King of Judea for him , but in turn solve those which Solomon was unable to solve and in this way win back a lot of money.
