Abel Tasman Inland Track

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Abel Tasman Inland Track is a 38 kilometer hiking trail from Marahau in the south to the Wainui car park on Wainui Bay in the north of the Abel Tasman National Park (New Zealand).

The Inland Track is one of the two main routes in the national park, the Abel Tasman Coast Track , which runs parallel to the winding coast, is around 51 kilometers long.

The trail is accessible all year round thanks to the mild climate, but is completely unpaved except for 1.5 km, which it shares with the Coastal between Marahau and Tinline Bay. The route is marked by markings on trees - can lids painted orange. Between the endpoints it only crosses Totaranui Road, furthermore there are two junctions to drivable roads inland. Three shelters of the Department of Conservation (DOC) can be used to spend the night on the path, which can be walked in two to three days . In contrast to the Coastal with over 200,000 visitors per year, the Inland Track is only used by just under 1,000 visitors a year.

The track should only be used by experienced hikers in physical fitness and with good orientation. Streams have to be jumped over or waded through, the huts have no food supplies and you have to bring your own cooking utensils. Hikes must be registered, the planned arrival should be communicated. The area is only accessible on foot or by helicopter and you often don't meet other visitors all day, which is why individual hikes are not advisable.

Refuges

  • Moa Hut, 2.2 miles from Castle Rock Hut, may no longer be maintained by the DOC
  • Awapoto Hut, 9.5 km from Moa Hut, and 13.5 km from Wainui car park
