Rainforest adventure

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The online magazine Abenteuer-Regenwald.de is monothematic about the rainforest and its protection. The focus is on articles about the animal and plant species of the rainforest, the reasons for their threats and suggestions for sustainable behavior. In addition, game and learning materials are available for preparing lessons. Rainforest Adventure is primarily aimed at Internet users between 8 and 15 years of age.

All information and materials are offered free of charge. There is no access restriction and no registration requirement. The website is ad-free.

editor

The online magazine is operated by the non-profit association Umwelthelden eV from Hamburg. It is based on the primarily voluntary work of the association members and is financed through donations. In addition to the editorial and graphic preparation of the content for the online magazine, the association regularly implements topic-specific projects that also contain teaching material for school lessons. In 2020 the Postcode Lottery and the North German Foundation for Environment and Development will support the project “What is the rainforest doing in my mobile phone?”. The project “No rainforest on my plate” is financed with money from the #moinzukunft Hamburg Climate Fund of the Hamburg Climate Protection Foundation and the Authority for Environment and Energy.

The site is hosted in Germany and is therefore subject to German or European data protection .

distribution

According to the sponsoring association, the website has around 1.1 million users per year. The information is only provided in German. Most of the accesses are therefore from Germany, followed by Austria and Switzerland at a distance.

Awards

  • In 2015, the website received the Goldener Spatz as the best nature website for children from a children's and expert jury of the German Children's Media Foundation
  • The United Nations recognized Rainforest Adventure 2015, 2017 and 2019 as the “UN Decade Project for Biodiversity”
  • The website bears the seal of “Erfurt Netcode for particularly safe children's media” and is a member of the Seitenstark children's network

relevance

The content of the website is regularly picked up by school book publishers. The children's and knowledge pages of daily newspapers also use material from Adventure Rainforest for their media. The recognition of children's media networks, school book publishers and representatives of the respective federal ministries shows the pioneering role the website has played in education for sustainable development in the rainforest sector .

history

The website was launched in 2004 by the Hamburg association Rettet den Regenwald eV. At the end of 2015, members of the editorial team founded a non-profit sponsoring association, Umwelthelden eV, Hamburg. The newly founded association took over the website and domain and has been running the advertising-free online portal as an independent educational website for children and young people since 2017.

Working method

The editorial and visual content as well as the programming of the online magazine is mainly done by three club members. The editorial team is also responsible for checking and answering the comments, which are possible for almost all pages and contributions.

technology

The website is based on the open source CMS Sulu. The proportion of image and graphic material is high, depending on the usage habits of the target group. A large number of downloads, mostly in PDF format, are made available in the action area.
