Gorleben waste storage facility

The Gorleben waste storage facility (ALG), near the municipality of Gorleben in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district ( Lower Saxony , Germany ), is used for the interim storage of radioactive waste with negligible heat generation, mainly from the operation of German nuclear power plants , but also from research and industry. It is operated by the Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH (GNS).

The license for this warehouse was first granted in 1983 by the State Trade Inspectorate in Lüneburg (GAA) in accordance with Section 3 of the Radiation Protection Ordinance (now: Section 7). The commissioning took place in 1984. The Lüneburg ATM is also the responsible supervisory authority.

The warehouse is 4,500 m² in size and around 5 m high. It has a capacity of 15,000 m³.

Before their temporary storage in the waste storage facility the waste is either at source or other appropriate equipment conditioned , d. H. Packaged in special containers for final disposal. As types of containers are approved for the intermediate storage container and round container of steel, concrete or cast iron.
