The Abhayagiri Monastery ( Pali for " fearless mountain "; English Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery ) in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County in northern California is the first Buddhist monastery founded by followers of Ajahn Chah in the USA . It is part of the Thai forest tradition of Theravada Buddhism.

The origins of the monastery go back to Ajahn Sumedho's visits to northern California in the early 1980s. In 1988 the Sanghapala Foundation was founded by his students ; from 1990 Ajahn Amaro was the central teacher of the Californian followers of Chahs and Sumedho. The monastery was finally founded in 1995 thanks to the support of the Chan master Hsuan Hua , abbot of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas near Ukiah, shortly before his death. It is named after the temple of the same name in Sri Lanka .

About 17 monks live in the monastery , the current abbot (as of 2010) is Ajahn Pasanno . The monastery has the branch Pacific Hermitage in White Salmon ( Washington ).
