Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi (2004)

Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi , formerly Haji Abdullah ( Arabic أبو إبراهيم الهاشمي القرشي; * October 1 or October 5, 1976 in Tal Afar , Iraq as Amir Mohammed Abdul Rahman al-Mawli al-Salbi ( Arabic أمير محمد عبد الرحمن المولى الصلبي); † February 3, 2022 in Atmeh , Syria ) was an Iraqi terrorist who was the leader of the jihadist terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) from 2019 to 2022 .

Before becoming the leader of IS, he was one of its main ideologues and one of the few survivors of the first generation of IS. In this position, he justified the 2014 genocide of the Yazidis .

Life

Al-Qurayshi was born Amir Mohammed Abdul Rahman al-Mawli al-Salbi on October 1 or 5, 1976 in Tal Afar near Mosul, Iraq, to a Turkmen family.

According to the Guardian, he was "one of the highest-ranking Iraqis" and had a degree in Sharia law from Mosul University .

In 2004, al-Qurayshi was imprisoned in the US prison camp at Camp Bucca near Umm Qasr in Iraq, where he is said to have met his later predecessor Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi . Various later IS members were imprisoned in Camp Bucca, who probably met there. In 2014, he justified the genocide of the Yazidis as one of the most important ideologues of the IS. In late summer 2019, Salbi, as al-Baghdadi's adjutant at the time, was wanted by the United States with two other high-ranking IS members with a bounty of $5 million.

From August 2019, he was traded as a potential successor to al-Baghdadi, who was already seriously ill. His accession to power was announced by the IS media channel Amaq on October 31, 2019, after the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi . The al-Quraishi part of his pseudonym suggests that he claims affiliation with the Quraish tribe , which should increase his legitimacy. During his time as leader of the IS, he tried to consolidate the new leadership team, which apart from himself consisted almost exclusively of younger members who had played no relevant role in the Iraq war .

US President Joe Biden announced that al-Qurayshi was killed on February 3, 2022. According to a US official, the IS leader blew himself up during an airborne operation by United States Joint Special Operations Command helicopters . He also killed family members, including women and children, in the blast. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights , around 13 civilians died in the course of the attempted access to al-Qurayshi.

family

Al-Qurayshi had at least one son. His brother Adel Salbi is a deputy for the Turkmen Iraqi Front .
