Moving away (Vienna water supply)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The short-term periodic shutdown of one of the two high spring water pipes of the Vienna water supply is called a move away .

Originally it is a technical term used by the water mill. This actually meant the discharge of the upstream water and was taken over by MA 31 - Wiener Wasser for the decommissioning of the two main lines.

The purpose of this sweeping is, on the one hand, to maintain the flawless structural condition of the ducts and thus an operation that is as trouble-free as possible, as well as compliance with the hygiene requirements from the 1959 WRG and the Drinking Water Ordinance.

As planned, four sweeps take place annually on both the first and second Viennese spring water pipelines, each of which may take a maximum of about 70 hours due to the security of supply for the city of Vienna . There is an interval of two weeks between the turns. The number of turns is chosen by Municipal Department 31 - Wiener Wasser itself and is not specified in any regulation.

In order to be able to use the short time available effectively, the respective work is planned according to material, personnel, time and equipment requirements. During the turnaround, the sewer is cleaned of deposits by hand or machine and checked for damage, damage detected earlier is repaired according to the plan. The damage found during the inspection during the turnaround will be taken into account when drawing up the next renovation plan, depending on the urgency.

The work is either carried out by members of MA 31 themselves or outsourced to external companies. Also involved in this work are

  • Municipal Department 29 - Vienna Bridge Construction and Foundation Construction , the
  • Municipal Department 39 - Testing, Monitoring and Certification Body of the City of Vienna and the
  • Municipal Department 41 - City Surveying .

In the first decades after the Second World War, the Viennese newspapers at least reported the time of each departure; today such reports are rarely found. In July 2007, Spiegel TV broadcast a documentary about the departure as part of a theme evening.
