Subscription call

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Australian Abo Call was the first Aboriginal publication brought out by an Aborigine. It was published by Jack Patten and appeared in six issues from April to September 1938. The newspaper's subtitle was The Voice of the Aborigines . Patten was a politically active Aboriginal who u. a. was involved in the first massive Aboriginal strike, the Cummeragunja Walk-off , and was the initiator of the Day of Mourning .

Although Patten was a co-founder and member of the Aboriginal Progressive Association , the secretary of that organization, William Ferguson , was against the subscription call because Ferguson wanted to publish an Aboriginal magazine as well.

Abo is an offensive Aboriginal term in use in Australia.

Abo Call magazine stopped publishing after six months due to lack of funds.
