AboutUs.org is a wiki- based commercial English-language Internet directory founded in 2005 by Ray King from Portland , USA . It lists web pages with information about their content and whois information. Every visitor can add or change entries, MediaWiki is used as software .
With more than 2.9 million articles in February 2008, it was one of the largest wikis, even before the English-language Wikipedia . According to its own information, AboutUs.org has over 10 million pages, although the term article requires a higher quality standard than page (for example, no user or discussion pages or forum contributions are allowed).
Most of the pages in AboutUs.org are created by bots that copy the content of pages that describe the respective website (hence the name About Us ) into the wiki. This practice also brought criticism to the directory, as it means that copyrighted material is copied without the permission of the rights holder and contact information is also adopted, which in the opinion of some could be questionable in terms of data protection law. Aboutus.org defends this practice by arguing that search engines like Google or internet portals like Alexa.com work in the same way.
Ward Cunningham joined AboutUs in May 2007 as Chief Technical Officer .
