Howard G. Cunningham (born May 26, 1949 ) is an American programmer . He is known as the founder of the Wiki Wiki Web and as a pioneer in design patterns and extreme programming .

On March 25, 1995, he founded the Wiki Wiki Web (also known as WardsWiki ) for the Portland Pattern Repository, the first wiki , an online journal for design patterns for programs and the first point of contact when it comes to developing software using Extreme Programming . Cunningham is one of the authors and an early signer of the Manifesto for Agile Software Development .

From December 2003 to October 2005 he worked for Microsoft . From October 2005 to May 2007 he was with the Eclipse Foundation and since May 2007 he has been Chief Technical Officer of the Internet directory AboutUs.org . He lives in Beaverton , Oregon .

Cunningham's Law

Cunningham is credited with saying, "The best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question, but to spread the wrong answer." Steven McGeady received this advice from Cunningham in the early 1980s and later made it known as " Cunningham's Law ". While Cunningham was referring to Usenet at the time , it was used to describe how Wikipedia works, which Cunningham created with WikiWikiWeb. Cunningham himself contradicts in a short YouTube video: the law would refute itself as it spreads over the Internet.
