Roll-off nest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A roll-off nest is a form of laying nests used in the keeping and breeding of chickens .

Layout and function

With a roll- off nest , the eggs are immediately removed from the hen by rolling them out of the nest over a sloping floor or through a hole. Then they are collected, for example, in a gutter or in a collecting container outside the nest. This is to prevent the eggs from being soiled by excrement from the chicken. Such contamination can lead to a reduction in the quality of the eggs, as various substances from these contaminants can penetrate into the interior through the pores of the eggshell. In addition, the use of roll-off nests prevents the hens from eating the eggs themselves, which can result, for example, from unfavorable housing or feeding conditions.

Roll-off nests are mainly used for cage and floor keeping of chickens.

criticism

One point of criticism when using roll-off nests is that the chicken is disturbed in its natural behavior. Normally, the hen would remain on the egg for a while after laying, but this is prevented by its rolling out of the nest, which contradicts its innate behavior.
