The crash of a Let L-410, the Filair in Bandundu occurred on August 25, 2010. On that day, crashed near the city of Bandundu in the Democratic Republic of Congo on a domestic flight of the airline Filair a regional transport aircraft of type LET L-410UVP-E Turbolet from . 20 out of 21 people on board were killed.

The affected machine was a Let L-410UVP-E Turbolet, which was built by LET in Kunovice , Czechoslovakia . It had the factory number 912608 and was delivered in 1991. The twin-engine regional airliner had two Walter M601E turboprop engines . The machine was initially delivered to Aeroflot , where it was operated with the Soviet aircraft registration number CCCP-67678 . Later the machine was in operation as OK-WDG for a Czech company and then until 2007 as OK-WDG for the Estonian airline Airest . Finally, in 2009, the Filair took over the Let and registered it with the aircraft registration 9Q-CCN .

the accident

With the machine, a domestic passenger flight from was Airport Kinshasa N'Dolo to Airport Bandundu in the Democratic Republic of Congo carried out. During the approach, the nose of the aircraft tilted down at around 13:00 UTC + 1 (12:00 UTC ) and the aircraft crashed into a mud hut one kilometer from the runway. The plane was destroyed by the impact forces. All people on board, except for one passenger, were killed. According to media reports, there were no injuries on the ground.

Local radio station Radio Okapi initially reported that the machine ran out of fuel after it was unable to land in Bandundu. Filair later stated that there were still 150 liters of kerosene on board.

Cause of accident

After the sole survivor was available for questioning, he was questioned about the incident. He reported that another passenger brought a crocodile in a bag on board to sell at a market in Bandundu. On the approach to the airport, the animal freed itself from the bag. The passengers and flight attendants then ran in a panic into the front of the machine, which shifted the aircraft's center of gravity and crashed the machine. The crocodile also reportedly survived the crash, but was subsequently killed by authorities.

On April 4, 2019, Eden Books published the title “The Crocodile in the Airplane”. The Filair crash is presented in the book together with 91 bizarre deaths while traveling, the cover picture also refers to the crash.
