The Abbey Pécsvárad was a Benedictine monastery from the 11th to the 16th century in Pécsvárad .

history

The beginnings of the monastery are unclear. It was probably founded by King Stephen I of Hungary , possibly at a royal court. The alleged document from 1015 with the equipment of the monastery with 42 villages was only created around 1220 and reflects the conditions of the later period. The consecration of the monastery church has been handed down for the year 1039, possibly the monastery was founded shortly before.

After a fire in 1157, the complex was reinforced and a new Gothic church was built in the 13th century. From 1125 to 1128, the future King Béla II lived in the monastery, which he then made generous with donations. In the 14th century the cloister was renewed and the entire complex was fortified so that it got a castle-like character. In the 15th century, the Pécsvárad Abbey was one of the richest in Hungary, the abbots were among the highest-ranking clergy, some were even confirmed by the Pope. After the Turkish invasion of Hungary, the monks left the abbey in 1539, and in 1543 it was destroyed.

Further use

At the end of the 17th century the complex was not rebuilt, but ownership rights to villages and land remained and were given to titular abbots . German immigrants were settled in 1729. In 1778/79 the benefices of the former abbey were largely given to the University of Pécs by Empress Maria Theresa. A foundation was set up in the monastery grounds. This was dissolved in 1945 and a state forest administration was housed in the complex. In 1957 archaeological excavations took place. In 1969 the forestry department was relocated. After further archaeological investigations in 1987, a restaurant and hotel were built there the following year. Today there is a hotel complex and a museum about the history of the region.
