Parliamentary election in Turkmenistan 2018
The parliamentary elections in Turkmenistan in 2018 for the election of the Mejlis (German assembly ) took place on March 25, 2018.
Election result
The ruling Democratic Party of Turkmenistan (DPT) remained the largest party in the 125-strong Mejis in the second multi-party election since the country gained independence in 1991. Serdar Berdimuhamedov , the son of President Berdimuhamedov , was re-elected to the Assembly and was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister on March 30.
No official reasons were given for holding early elections, which under the Constitution would not have been due until December. The elections took place amid an economic crisis and were the first since the 2016 constitutional amendments that lifted the age limit of 70 for presidential candidates and extended the presidential term from five to seven years. The incumbent president, who has been in power since 2007, was re-elected in February 2017.
