Abu Ghuraib ( Arabic أبو غريب Abū Ghuraib , DMG Abū Ġurayb , locally Abū Ghraib or Abū Ghrēb ; sometimes also written Abu Gharaib or Abu Ghreib ) is an Iraqi city that borders Baghdad to the west and belongs to the province of Baghdad . The population is between 750,000 and 1.5 million people.
The city is located north-northwest of Baghdad International Airport at the level of the old city center on the old road to Jordan .
The notorious Abu Ghuraib prison made the city famous as early as the time of Saddam Hussein . In 2004, the torture scandal in the prison now run by the US Army attracted international attention.
