Oh Elslein, dear Elselein

Oh Elslein, dear Elselein ... is the beginning of the text of a German-language song, in the variant "Elzeleyn, lipstis elzeleyn ..." first as a bookmark (tone, that is a melody reference to a song text not notated there) in the Glogau song book , dated around 1480. Probably it is the beginning of the "Elslein verse" and thus the beginning of the song of the folk ballad of the "royal children" ( there were two royal children ) that was handed down later . The melody runs through the printed tradition with Hans Gerle (1532), Hans Neusidler (1536) and Wolfgang Schmeltzl (1544), and it is one of the melody types for the “King's Children” with the text beginning “Elslein, dearest Elslein, how like if I were with you… ”It is also the source for many notes (melody used for other texts) from the 15th to the 20th century (which proves that the song was also very popular). We can find the text that goes with it most likely in an early copy from Georg Forster ( Georg Forster (composer) ), Fresh Teutsche Liedlein … , Part 2, Nuremberg 1540, No. 49, with two stanzas (“Es warb ein Schöne Jüngling…” / “Oh Elßlein, dear bule, how much I love to be with you ... "). Melody and text with three stanzas ("Oh Elslein, dear Elselein ... two deep waters between you and me." / "That brings me great pain ..." / "Hope, time will probably end ...") after "Joh. Ott, 1534 ”(that is Hans Ott (publisher) , the composition is by Ludwig Senfl , 1534) is the song called“ Liebesklage ”in the popular song book of the Wandervogelzeit, Der Zupfgeigenhansl , since the 4th edition in 1911 and is with this The book of useful songs has become popular and has remained popular.
