history

In 1993 the Muslim community "Star of the Prophet" was founded in Donetsk. A year later the foundation stone was laid for the first mosque in the region. The plans for the building were borrowed from one of Istanbul's mosques .

The main sponsor of the project was Achat Bragin. After his tragic death on October 15, 1995, it was decided to name the mosque after him. Originally, the building was only supposed to have one minaret, but funding from Rinat Akhmetov made a second possible, which was finally named after him. The Ukrainian Islamic University - the first Muslim institution for higher education in Ukraine - is located on the first floor .

The mosque and Islamic University were officially opened on September 3, 1999.
