Michael Davitt Bridge

The Michael Davitt Bridge (Irish Droichead Mhíchíl Mhic Dhaibhéid ) is a swing bridge that connects Acaill with the An Corrán Peninsula ( Curraun Peninsula ) on the main Irish island. The bridge is named after Michael Davitt , a Fenian and founder of the National Land League who officially opened the bridge in 1887.

In 1947 the first bridge, which had become too narrow for modern traffic, had to be replaced by a new one, which was built south of the old bridge. It also bears the name Michael Davitt Bridge. The bridge is owned by the Mayo County Council . Since the "new" bridge was no longer able to cope with the volume of traffic, it was replaced by a new one in summer 2008. The new building, which bears the old name, is 6.5 m wide, 225.5 m long and weighs 390 t. The bridge is illuminated at night by LED lamps built into it.
